Celebrating Duke Ellington's 125th Birthday in The City of Jazz

This project is made possible in part with funds from Creative Engagement a regrant program supported by the funding agencies: The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in partnership with the City Council, The New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature the Howard Gilman Foundation and administered by LMCC.

Black, Brown and Beige is an extended jazz work written by Duke Ellington for his first concert at Carnegie Hall, on January 23, 1943. It tells the history of African Americans and was the composer's attempt to transform attitudes about race, elevate American music, specifically jazz, to be seen as on par with classical European music, and challenge America to live up to its founding principles of freedom and equality for all.

Sophisticated Lady Level - $250.00
Duke Ellington and His Orchestra introduced "Sophisticated Lady" in 1933 with an instrumental recording of the song that featured solos by Toby Hardwick on alto sax, Barney Bigard on clarinet, Lawrence Brown on trombone and Ellington on piano. The recording entered the charts on 27 May 1933 and rose to number three.**

C Jam Blues Level - $100.00

“C Jam Blues” was introduced as a 1941 Soundie short film called “Jam Session” with melody by Duke Ellington. In the late 1950s, words were added by Bill Katz, Ruth Roberts and Bob Thiele and recordings made under the title “Duke’s Place”.
